During this symposium, experts will share their insights on long-term disorders of consciousness, with presentations by chairman of the day Dr. Jan Lavrijsen, dr. Willemijn van Erp, dr. Astrid Hoedemaekers and dr. Pepijn van den Munckhof. Berno Overbeek will then defend his thesis 'Minimally conscious state in the Netherlands: diagnosis, prevalence and characteristics' at Radboud University. Don't miss this unique opportunity to stay up to date with the latest developments in the care of people with severe acquired brain injury.

Participation is completely free (including lunch)!

Dr. Willemijn Van Erp

Long-term disorders of consciousness in the unique Dutch context

dr. Willemijn van Erp - Specialist geriatric medicine, Radboudumc, EENnacoma & Libra Rehabilitation & Audiology
In this presentation you will be taken through the long-term disorders of consciousness in the unique Dutch context. Willemijn explains what LBS are and why they are relevant, discusses treatment options and decision-making and concludes with future perspectives.

Disorders of consciousness in the ICU

Dr. Astrid Hoedemaekers - Intensivist, Radboudumc
Every year, thousands of patients with severe brain injury for various causes are admitted to an intensive care unit in a coma. Most of them regain consciousness within a few days, but sometimes recovery of consciousness is not forthcoming. For the relatives of these patients and the treatment team, this leads to great uncertainty about what to do. Wait for recovery and continue with treatment where there is a high chance of a severely disabled life in the future? Or stop the treatment aimed at recovery and switch to a palliative policy aimed at comfortable death? If treatment is discontinued, there is a real possibility that the patient will be deprived of a chance of recovery. The Centre of Expertise for COmaDIAgnostiek (CODIA) aims to standardise and improve the diagnosis and care for coma patients and their loved ones.

To date, 4 patients have been operated on and treated. During the presentation, an overview of the study and preliminary results will be given.
