Non-responsive wakefulness syndrome (NWS), formerly known as 'vegetative state',is one of the most dramatic outcomes for patients with acute brain injury. After a period of coma, a patient with the NWS opens the eyes spontaneously and breathes independently, but only shows reflex reactions without objectifiable signs of consciousness.
