His research is about people who end up in a minimally conscious state after severe brain injury. The minimally conscious state (minimal conscious state; MCS) is one of the most serious consequences of acquired brain injury. The study looked at the significance of eye movements in the diagnosis of MCS. In addition, it was investigated how many people in the Netherlands are in this condition and what medical complications they often have. It also investigated which decisions doctors make about treatment and the difficulties they experience in doing so.

This research was supervised by Prof. Raymond Koopmans, Dr. Jan Lavrijsen, Dr. Henk Eilander and Dr. Willemijn van Erp and funded by Azora, Kalorama (Joannes de Deo Foundation), The Coma Hospice and the Netherlands Brain Foundation.
