As a resident in geriatric medicine, I became the treating physician of a patient with the classic Locked-in Syndrome. I found out that at the time very little or nothing was known about this picture in nursing homes, which also applies to ABI in a general sense. After looking at how many people with classic Locked-in syndrome stayed in the nursing homes and what their characteristics were, I started to focus on the problems of the larger group of people with severe ABI in the nursing homes and specifically behavioral changes. This led to a dissertation that I successfully defended in October 2021.
